#IRegretNothing

New to BookLikes

Hello there!

I only heard about this website yesterday, after it started the discussion about GoodReads censorship *cough* New Policy Review!

I'm an active reader and reviewer and just to think, that somehow a place I consider a "home", would start behaving like that, just makes me sad.

Always the excuse is that's something harmless but isn't how censorship/dictatorship starts?

Anyway,so now I'm exploring the alternatives, in this case, BookLikes. So far I like the visual and what's offering to the users. It's still importing my books from GR (still 1356 books/1311 hours left, aha) and only then I'll start formatting the reviews, with pics and so on. And oh my, they allow half stars system!! YAY!

I hope this will be a book Haven and a place we will all be free to share one thing we have in common, our love for books!

Gone Girl is a must read...

Gone Girl - Gillian Flynn
I'm still a loss with words to describe what I felt reading this book!

Full of twists and turns, the power to crush every single notion you could have about the characters...crush and constantly rebuild the view you have of them.
Is he/she capable of that?
Who is lying and who is telling the truth!

In the day of their 5th wedding anniversary, Nick's wife , Amy, disappeared. Without a trace.
Nick's reactions and behaviors are odd to say the least...he is lying, he was unhappy...but was he somehow responsible for her disappearing?

What happened to Amy?

******

The story is told in a different sort of dual POV. We have Nick's dealing with his wife missing...

There's something disturbing about recalling a warm memory and feeling utterly cold.

...and then we have Amy's diary entries, recalling how they met and many key moments of their relationship/marriage.

His eyelashes are trimmed with powder, and before he leans in, he brushes the sugar from my lips so he can taste me.

And many times things may seem off, how one account doesn't match the perception you had of said character.
Oh I confess, my opinion of Nick was constantly changing...he could be an asshole, a douchebag and then have redeeming qualities. I kind of liked him but wanted to punch him in the face!
And Amy? Solely by her diary entries,I thought she wasn't as perfect as she wanted to show! The constant need to be the cool wife, the one that was doing everything to save her marriage.

Now, I can't say much more because I would spoil it...I mean, one of the amazing things about this story are the twists, the way you're left with your mouth wide open and feeling like you were punched in the gut.
I'll say this, part 2 of the story, WILL BLOW YOUR MIND!!

I couldn't believe it!!!
I'll just say that from that point on, your opinion of one of the characters will change drastically!
We will meet the cold and genius mind of a sociopath...the unscrupulous planning , the manipulation and above all how appearances can be misleading.
Amy is a SICK SICK person! A psycho bitch, that thinks she is better than everyone else...that everyone should put her in a freaking pedestal and adore her!
Most definitely one of the most disturbing characters ever!

Now, is this book a turn pager?
It sure is!

The characters are complex and you'll be trying to put the pieces of this puzzle together. And failing BIG TIME!!

The story is dark, it's disturbing and it's just awesome! I loved it and now in need of therapy, aha.

And how about the ending?
I can get why many HATED the ending! At this point, I didn't even know what I think of it! I don't LOVE it and I don't HATE it! I'm still in a state of disbelief (I read that final chapter like 5 times)!
It's just torture how the author ended the story!!
In the last chapters of the book she trowed a bomb of epic proportions and we are left to fill out the spaces!
But those last lines gave me the chills you guys, the chills!

Welcome to Volera's world...

Endgame (Voluntary Eradicators, #1) - Nenia Campbell
Imagine a distant future...
a dystopian world...
a city that never sleeps...

That's Volera Magray aka Vol world.
She is a Player. She plays VR games against other players. Games that are increasingly getting more realistic, where she have to fight for her life.
Vol lives for game after game, it all she does, the only life she knows! She doesn't have any recall of her past before she reached the city.
That means no family, no friends, not a place to call home.
She only knows her district was obliterated by the regime and is plagued by haunting dreams, that seem more like distant memories...

"Each morning she wakes feeling as if her life's story is but a word on the tip of the tongue, capable of being recalled at any given moment.
Each morning, she awakes disappointed "

Meanwhile the game are getting more brutal and those new games are from unknown source, someone is hacking the system...and the danger behind it keeps increasing in each new game.

And then Catan Vareth enters in Vol's life...

She is not certain where to look.
He has the sinful mouth and deadly eyes of a cobra, magnetic, repellent, and beautiful.
When his teeth close down lightly on his full lower lip, Vol flushes as if she has just caught him pleasuring himself.

He is infuriating, dominant and think he can own everyone. But still Vol can't explain the pull she feels towards him or why he feels so familiar.

The line between reality and fiction will become even more blurry... games become deadlier...Who is behind it all?

THIS IS THE BEST!!!!

I can't praise Nenia Campbell enough!
Damn, she can write! I caught myself highlighting really big chunks of text.

I must admit, that I was never a gamer but I was caught up in this world of VR games. And mixing it up, with sci-fi/dystopian elements? WIN,WIN,WIN!

I loved Vol! She is such a kick ass heroine but at the same time so vulnerable. She is trying to figure out who she is and at the same time afraid of what she may had done.

And Catan?

I freakin LOVE him!!
Huge crush you guys, HUGE!!

At first,I wanted to slap myself and say "Don't fall for the bastard" BUT through the whole story you get to know him and the way he is with Vol...and well, you'll love him!

"I remember something."
"Yes?"
"You told me once that you were going to break my heart."
He rolls over to face her, "Yes,"he says. "I may once have said something like that."
"What happened?"
His beautiful eyes are even more hypnotic up close.
"You broke mine."

SEE??

And can we talk of the sexual tension?
That glorious sexual tension?
That scorching hot chemistry?

Yep! *nods approvingly *

The end was a bit rushed and intense but I'm happy that will get a 2nd book! Hopefully we will get more answers and more input in the whole dystopian universe.

The Hot Girl's Friend - Lisa Scott

I was looking for a short and fun book to read, and I'm glad I found this one!Jane it's used to be in the shadow of her best friend Melody...if they go to the bar, every man attention it's to her blonde bombshell friend. So she is used to help her friend, from some unwanted attention, making up hilarious excuses (like, she just got out of jail and so on)...and it's caught up lying by the handsome bartender Brady. One thing, leads to another, and a bet is made! And they both get more they have bargained for!Really fun read =D

Wishing Stars: Space Opera Fairytales - Nenia Campbell Come closer, my dears, let me give you a warning,Of the fate that befalls those who stay out past morning,In the darkest hours before the dawn,When witches roam and demons spawn,And children die with spirit gone,Magicked away in the gloaming. In Wishing Stars we have bound up together retold fairy tales and some original poems.I haven't read much sci-fi, which it's kind of odd since I do love it in TV shows and movies (Dr Who, anyone? )! But I'm always up to engage in new stories, even more if I love how the "authors voice".Anyway, so we have 5 retelling of fairy tales, each one in space and involving Aliens. Now, how cool is that? You'll get an unique take on those familiar stories! Now I won't tell much about each story because that would ruin the experience of trying to figure it which tale is it :DI can say that I had 2 favorites among them : Deep Blue Nightmare and Blood of My Blood ! It got me hooked and enthralled in it... and are by far the creepiest of them all, ahah. And the poems?I loved them! I wish I could write like that *sighHere it's an excerpt of one of my favorites:The thing is with the short stories and the poems, you'll want more! My final thought about this one?
